GOP 'fiscal cliff' endgame: Let big government sting the middle class?

For some tea party Republicans, part of the political calculation ahead of the 2014 elections is whether going off the fiscal cliff would spell political disaster or instead be seen as a return to principled governance.

A police officer stands guard outside the U.S. Capitol in Washington Friday. President Barack Obama and congressional leaders agreed to make a final effort to prevent the United States from going over the "fiscal cliff," setting off intense bargaining over Americans' tax rates as a New Year's Eve deadline looms.

If President Obama and Congressional leaders fail to avert the ?fiscal cliff? of scheduled tax increases and spending cuts by 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, America?s 114-millon-strong middle class will take it hard on the chin ? a $3,500 tax blow per family, on average.

Politicians make careers out of protecting the middle class, which is why the President has focused his solution on raising taxes just for richer Americans ? those making $250,000 and more ? while warning Americans in his weekly Saturday address that, ?Every American?s paycheck will get a lot smaller? if the fiscal cliff isn?t averted, which specifically ?would hurt middle class families.?

Republican leadership, too, has been forced into a corner, in part by Obama as well as the party?s own right wing, as members have failed to come to agreement over agreeing to some tax concessions for the rich in order to stave off what amounts to a wholesale middle class tax hike.

For some intractable Republican House members, political experts say, part of the political calculation ahead of the 2014 mid-term elections is whether going off the fiscal cliff would spell political disaster or whether it may be seen more broadly as a return to what many see as principled governance.

2012 enters the record books. Were you paying attention? A news quiz.

As Wall Street indices got jittery on Friday, it began to look like some kind of piecemeal deal that would include a tax compromise and extension of unemployment benefits could be done by the drop-dead deadline, but it could be contingent on Republicans having to come back to fight for spending cuts at a later date.

That development puts the spotlight straight back on the kind of anti-tax, anti-spend tea party principles that helped to give the GOP the House in 2010, but which also left the party deeply fractured after Obama?s reelection this November.

To be sure, there may be a deeper logic than simple obstructionism at play within the GOP caucus, where some members, the theory goes, may be seeing an opportunity to avoid direct blame for a major middle class tax hike while making a deeper point about how America should be governed. How? By letting middle-class Americans start bearing the actual cost of electing a progressive president and a Democratic Senate, neither of which has seriously addressed entitlement spending.

?How can we expect people to care about the growth of government if it doesn?t cost them anything?? writes Marc Thiessen, a fellow with the American Enterprise Institute, in a Saturday Washington Post column. ?Big government is great if you don?t have to pay for it. Well, now it?s time to pay the bill. Maybe when the costs of the stimulus, Obamacare and exploding entitlements are finally deducted from their paychecks, Americans will rediscover the virtue of smaller government.?

Liberals point to a counter-logic that they contend will drive even tea party Republicans to strike a last-minute deal to avoid the fiscal cliff.

?If the deal is reached ? the Republicans have won: they have locked in a federal tax system that collects so little total federal revenue that government can afford almost nothing aside from the military, interest payments, retirement programs and health care,? writes Jeffrey Sachs, author of ?The Price of Civilization,? on the Huffington Post.

Senate should pass tax relief now, McConnell says

During an oddly jokey statement at the White House as the fiscal deadline bore down Monday afternoon, President Obama said, "I'm going to be president for the next four years. I?hope." He was warning Republicans that, yes, they'd have to deal with him for a while. But it was, to be sure, a strange moment. Could he actually have been joking about assassination? About impeachment? The?apocalypse? Or has everyone just had enough of these negotiations??

How Neuroscientists Observe Brains Watching Movies

Unless you have been deaf and blind to the world over the past decade, you know that functional magnetic resonance brain imaging (fMRI) can look inside the skull of volunteers lying still inside the claustrophobic, coffinlike confines of a loud, banging magnetic scanner. The technique relies on a fortuitous property of the blood supply to reveal regional activity. Active synapses and neurons consume power and therefore need more oxygen, which is delivered by the hemoglobin molecules inside the circulating red blood cells. When these molecules give off their oxygen to the surrounding tissue, they not only change color?from arterial red to venous blue?but also turn slightly magnetic.

Activity in neural tissue causes an increase in the volume and flow of fresh blood. This change in the blood supply, called the hemodynamic signal, is tracked by sending radio waves into the skull and carefully listening to their return echoes. FMRI does not directly measure synaptic and neuronal activity, which occurs over the course of milliseconds; instead it uses a relatively sluggish proxy?changes in the blood supply?that rises and falls in seconds. The spatial resolution of fMRI is currently limited to a volume element (voxel) the size of a pea, encompassing about one million nerve cells.

Neuroscientists routinely exploit fMRI to infer what volunteers are seeing, imagining or intending to do. It is really a primitive form of mind reading. Now a team has taken that reading to a new, startling level.

A number of groups have deduced the identity of pictures viewed by volunteers while lying in the magnet scanner from the slew of map?like representations found in primary, secondary and higher-order visual cortical regions underneath the bump on the back of the head.

Jack L. Gallant of the University of California, Berkeley, is the acknowledged master of these techniques, which proceed in two stages. First, a volunteer looks at a couple of thousand images while lying in a magnet. The response of a few hundred voxels in the visual cortex to each image is carefully registered. These data are then used to train an algorithm to predict the magnitude of the fMRI response for each voxel. Second, this procedure is inverted. That is, for a given magnitude of hemodynamic response, a probabilistic technique called Bayesian decoding infers the most likely image that gave rise to the observed response in that particular volunteer (human brains differ substantially, so it is difficult to use one brain to predict the responses of another).

The best of these techniques exploit preexisting, or prior, knowledge about pictures that could have been seen before. The number of mathematically possible images is vast, but the types of actual scenes that are encountered in a world populated by people, animals, trees, buildings and other objects encompass a tiny fraction of all possible images. Appropriately enough, the images that we usually encounter are called natural images. Using a database of six million natural images, Gallant?s group showed in 2009 how brain responses of volunteers to photographs they had not previously encountered could be reconstructed.

From Images to Movies
These reconstructions are surprisingly good, even though they are based on the smudged activity of hundreds of thousands of highly diverse nerve cells, each one firing to different aspects of the image?its local intensity, color, shading, texture, and so on. A further limitation I have already alluded to is the 1,000-fold mismatch between the celerity of neuronal signals and the sedate pace at which the fMRI signal rises and falls.

Yet Gallant?s group fearlessly pushed on and applied Bayesian reconstruction techniques to the conceptually and computationally much more demanding problem of spatiotemporal reconstruction.

Three members of the group each watched about two hours? worth of short takes from various Hollywood movies. These data were used to train a separate encoding model for each voxel. The first part of the model consisted of a bank of neural filters. These filters are based on the cumulative research that has been conducted over two decades into the way nerve cells in the visual cortex in people and monkeys respond to seeing visual stimuli with varying positions, size, motion and speed. The second part of the model coupled these neuronal filters to the blood vasculature, describing how the neuronal activity is reflected in much slower fMRI signals.

German magazine mistakenly publishes Bush obituary

BERLIN (AP) ? Germany's respected news weekly Der Spiegel has mistakenly published an obituary for former U.S. President George H.W. Bush.

The unfinished obituary appeared on Der Spiegel's website for only a few minutes Sunday before it was spotted by Internet users and removed.

In it, the magazine's New York correspondent Marc Pitzke describes Bush as "a colorless politician" whose image only improved when it was compared to the later presidency of his son, George W. Bush.

Bush was hospitalized in Houston Nov. 23 for treatment of a bronchitis-related cough. He was moved to intensive care on Dec. 23 after he developed a fever.

A family spokesman says the 88-year-old former president was moved out of intensive care into a regular hospital room again Saturday after his condition improved.

Nissan upgrades US Leaf warranties, will 'restore' batteries that lose too much charge

Nissan Leaf to go farther and cost less in 2013

Nissan has thrown down the warranty gauntlet to other EV makers by announcing it would be the first to "restore" battery capacity if a Leaf's full charge fell below 9 out of 12 "bars" within 5 years or 60k miles. The new clause was announced by VP Andy Palmer and will go into effect in spring of next year on all models, including those sold in 2011 and 2012. The company stressed it would only "repair or replace the battery under warranty with a new or remanufactured unit to restore capacity at or above a minimum of nine bars," and not a full charge -- saying a gradual, but not excessive loss of charge was normal. Nissan added that it'd look to improve the accuracy of the battery gauge, since the aforementioned bars on the dash were computer managed and not exactly scientific. All of this applies to US-only vehicles for now, but similar policies will soon be applied worldwide, according to the statement. So, if you've been starting to get range anxiety, check the PR below for all the details.

(AP Photo/Courtesy Barb Murray)

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? A Wisconsin couple says clucks, not fire trucks, helped them escape a blaze at their home.

Dennis Murawska, 59, said a pet chicken named Cluck Cluck woke his wife Susan Cotey, 52, with loud clucking from its cage in the basement two floors below about 6:15 a.m. Thursday. The couple's two cats also were running around the main floor.

Murawska said he had been half awake but didn't know about the fire because the smoke alarms hadn't gone off. He realized something was wrong when his wife got up.

"The chicken gets quite vocal when she gets excited," he said.

Cluck Cluck came from a nearby farm in Alma Center, about 135 miles east of Minneapolis, Murawska said. When the chicken began wandering over to his house, his neighbor said he could kill it because it wasn't producing any eggs. But Murawska felt sorry for Cluck Cluck because she had a mutated foot and decided to keep her. He fed the bird and built a coop, and then his wife let Cluck Cluck into the basement on cold nights.

"I spent way more money than I ever should've," Murawska said by telephone. "I guess it paid off."

The couple escaped, and firefighters found the chicken in its cage and one of the cats alive in the basement. Another cat hasn't been found and is presumed dead, Murawska said. The couple and their surviving cat checked into a Black River Falls hotel, while Cluck Cluck is staying with the neighbor who used to own her.

Alma Center Fire Chief Jeff Gaede said the fire started in the attic of the attached garage and was not suspicious. The house was a total loss, but it could have been worse ? if not for the chicken.

"We are used to hearing about a dog or cat or something, but we never heard of a chicken waking up a resident for a fire," Gaede said. "That's pretty amazing."

File sharing: is it legal? | Ubpost News

By B.BYAMBADORJ

The entertainment industry has been fighting copyright infringers for a quite a long time now and as we know the ongoing fight went ?online.?In a way, online distribution of creative works made it easier and cheaper to distribute materials but also at the same time it has the negative impact of distributing materials without permission of the authors, which may have negative economic impact on the authors (this is a matter of debate). Direct distribution of copyrighted material is illegal and thus authorities may take action against them swiftly. But, file sharing through peer to peer network is definitely a huge obstacle for the entertainment industry. Instead of buying creative content, people would anonymously download them from other people who already purchased the content, utilizing peer to peer (P2P) software.
Mongolia is a developing country, and in that respect everything is growing ? from pro-piracyoperations to anti-piracy operations. The ongoing battle against online ?pirates? is not doing well in Mongolia, but just like everything here it is improving. The public awareness of intellectual property and laws that govern it is still a bit fuzzy, but the Mongolian Government has already begun to take serious action against online pirates.
This battle against piracy was recently felt in Mongolia ? that is, it was felt in the form of several Mongolian websites being shut down. According to the Government implementing agency CRC (which ordered the shutdown) the websites had copyright infringing materials on them that were being distributed freely. The shutdown order cites the infringement of Article 12 of Mongolian Law on Copyrighted Materials and other international copyright conventions Mongolia signed with other countries. This convention the order cites is most likely the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, which Mongolia signed in 1998. It allows the work or creation of a person from one country to be applicable for copyrights in any other country that has signed Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works. For example ? if I were to publish a book in Mongolia it can be protected by copyright laws in other countries that have also signed the Berne Convention.
Now, directly distributing copyrighted materials through downloads (and also encouraging to do so) is a direct violation copyright laws, which the aforementioned websites all did and thus were shutdown.
But file sharing is a whole different can of worms. File sharing is 100 percent legal, but sharing copyrighted material is not ? it becomes copyright infringement. The problem is that the P2P programs which enable users to share files use a method that makes a third party (authorities, for example) cannot know who is getting what from whom through the internet. Additionally, P2P programs are mostly used for legitimate purposes so it is impossible to do anything about the programs themselves.
Chad Perrin from Tech Republic puts it, ?The reason copyright infringement is so difficult to prevent under traditional copyright dependent business models is quite simply that the aim of preventing such infringement involves trying to keep people from making copies of what you have already given them. Preventing theft is (relatively speaking) easy; just keep your doors locked and theft becomes an extreme rarity, because you possess something and want to stop someone else from getting it.?
Essentially, it is almost impossible to prevent file sharing, unless the authors do not distribute them at all ? which is counterproductive.
In Mongolia, there are laws against copying and distributing (directly or indirectly), but just like the rest of the world, jurisdiction to ?control? file sharing is not exactly perfect. Mongolian jurisdiction may have the ?teeth? to combat copyrighted file distribution, but they may be a bit unprepared for file-sharing.

Big-game Redskins role reversal for RG3, Shanahan

(AP) ? Compare what was said Wednesday by Robert Griffin III and Mike Shanahan. One sounds like a stereotypical coach. The other could be mistaken for an overeager player.

A case of role reversal hit the Washington Redskins on Wednesday. The rookie quarterback, on the day of his Pro Bowl selection, downplayed Sunday's winner-take-all game against the Dallas Cowboys with one-game-at-a-time-type answers, while the veteran hard-nosed coach was the one whose words could be featured on a banner to promote a game that will decide the NFC East.

"It's the biggest stage, but none of us are looking at it that way," Griffin said. "It's another game we have to go out and win, and that's the way we look at it. Every moment in your life is the biggest one at that time, so we look forward to having many more of these, but we've got to make sure we take care of this one."

Griffin, elected a team captain at midseason, said he'll give his teammates that same even-keel message.

"Basketball, the big game, track, the finals, whatever it is, whenever you play the moment up too much it can become too big to seize the moment," said Griffin, whose big moments include winning a bowl game and the Heisman Trophy while at Baylor. "So you just want to make sure you don't make something so big that you can't grab ahold of it."

After Griffin left the room, along came Shanahan, who is looking to end a personal playoff drought. The coach won two Super Bowls with John Elway and the Denver Broncos in the 1990s but lost make-or-break games in the final weeks of the 2006 and 2008 seasons. He hasn't been to the postseason since 2005.

"These are the games you'll remember for the rest of your life. Win or go home," Shanahan said. "I don't care what playoff game, when I look back as an assistant or as a head coach, you go back and you think about the great experiences you had or the bad memories you have.

"You want to take advantage of these opportunities when they exist. They don't come around every day. And when they do come around, you want to make sure that you play your best and you prepare yourself the best possible way.

"And you tell that guys that this is not just a normal game. You've got to make sure the attention to detail's there. You can't make mistakes. The concentration level's got to be there."

Stay medium? Or get pumped? Think of it like any other game? Or treat it as special?

Or somehow do both?

With all due respect to Griffin ? who has deservedly won praise all season for having poise beyond his years ? the coach probably comes closer to reflecting the attitude in the locker room.

After all, the Redskins haven't been to the playoffs since 2007, and they haven't won a division title since 1999.

"This has only happened to me once before, where if you win that final game, you've got a playoff spot," left guard Kory Lichtensteiger said.

"It's a special feeling, and when you go a lot of seasons in a row without really playing for anything meaningful in December, it's quite a change. ... We're going to be hyped up. I don't think there's any way around that."

The Cowboys-Redskins game has been moved to Sunday night and will mark the end of the regular season. It's possible that Washington (9-6) could lose and still get a wild card berth, but only if the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings both lose earlier in the day.

There was one point on which Shanahan and Griffin agreed: These are the types of games that can make a career.

"At the end of the day, everybody is compared to winning championships, if you like it or not," Shanahan said. "Is it fair all the time? Probably not. But how you're going to be judged or ranked is how you play in those games. They define you, sometimes."

Griffin has already shown he can handle high-profile games, winning his NFL debut, his Monday night debut and his Thanksgiving debut. He ranks either first or second in the league in passer rating, yards-per-attempt and interception percentage.

He said he'll be able to do more physically against the Cowboys after his sprained right knee prompted coaches to limit the game plan in a 27-20 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

"Nothing's definite in the league with how you're going to be judged," Griffin said. "But if you play big in the big stages, people tend to write good things about you, so we all want to play well on the big stage."

While Shanahan's words could be used to market the game, Griffin didn't miss a chance to market himself. He was asked about a $10,000 fine, which he is appealing, levied recently by the NFL for wearing attire from his personal sponsor Adidas instead of league sponsor Nike at a postgame news conference.

"I understand the principle of that. And I respect that," Griffin said. "That why I haven't really worn that much Adidas at all."

"Three stripes," he added with a smile, a reference to the Adidas logo. "That's all I can say about that. Name-dropping all up in here."

Griffin got a mention by the NFL later in the day when he, left tackle Trent Williams and linebacker Lorenzo Alexander were the Redskins players selected to the Pro Bowl. All three are first-time selections with distinct stories: the rookie phenom, the athletic lineman who rededicated himself after last year's drug suspension, and the special teams standout finally getting his due.

"You can't play down those kind of things," Griffin said. "I've always said my whole football career that you don't play for awards. They just come. You don't say you're going to win the Heisman. You don't say you're going to win MVP. You go out and you prove it on the field, and if everyone feels that way then they'll give you that award."

Notes: WR Dezmon Briscoe did not practice Wednesday after missing his flight back from the Christmas break. "That'll cost a little cash," Shanahan said. ... RT Tyler Polumbus (concussion) and LB London Fletcher (sprained left ankle) did not practice, while CB DeJon Gomes (sprained left knee) was limited. ... The Redskins' new bubble paid off Wednesday when a winter storm forced the team inside for practice. A year ago, the players would have piled into cars to drive to a gym or an airport hangar.

Sonos Playbar appears at the FCC with WiFi, finally

Sonos is the de facto choice for multi-room audio, but even some of its biggest proponents will grumble about the lack of built-in WiFi -- going wireless in any way has meant tacking a Bridge on to the cost of an already expensive system. An FCC filing for an upcoming device, the Playbar, hints that common sense might have the upper hand. While there's few details of the audio system itself, there's explicit mentions of dual-band 802.11n WiFi inside. Just what that WiFi does is another matter. Sonos prefers using its proprietary network to cut back on lag and interference, so the Playbar's additional wireless may extend functionality rather than simplify our lives. With approval out of the way, there's a better chance we'll know the full story in the near future.

PFT: Bears' Melton expects 'dirty' game vs. Lions

TebowGetty Images

The soap opera continues, more than a week after the fat lady finished singing.

Quarterback-of-all-trades Tim Tebow has addressed with the media the report that he asked to be omitted from the team?s Wildcat package after being informed that he wouldn?t be the starting quarterback in Week 16.

?I never said, ?Hey, I don?t want to do anything.? I won?t do anything,?? Tebow said Wednesday, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.? ?That wasn?t the talk at all.? He knows that.? And everybody on this team knows that I would never not to do something if I was asked.? That?s what?s disappointing.? People saying, ?Oh, you quit.? Or you didn?t do this.?? That was not it at all.? It was just me asking to get an opportunity to play the position I love, which is quarterback.? It wasn?t me asking out of anything.?

Tebow acknowledges that coach Rex Ryan may have misinterpreted the message, and Tebow says he wishes he would have been ?more clear? when meeting with Ryan.

?I was definitely disappointed and frustrated and I let him know that,? Tebow said.? ?Just asked for an opportunity to play quarterback.? [On Friday, I told him that] I would do anything for this team like I have all year from punt to hands team to catching passes . . . whatever I could do. He appreciated that. He understood. We got a great relationship still.?

And that?s where the logic falls apart.? Tebow wouldn?t have had to tell Ryan that Tebow would do whatever the team needed on Friday.? Ryan would have already known it.

Tebow said he was bothered by the notion that he?s not a good teammate, which was perpetuated by whoever from the Jets organization told multiple reporters that Tebow asked to be left out of the Wildcat package.

?You work your whole life to build a reputation,? Tebow said.

That line, of course, will do nothing to convince those who think that Tebow is concerned more about his image than anything else.? Indeed, it will make the skeptics even more suspicious that there?s a disconnect between Tebow and his ?reputation.?

For that reason, it would make more sense for Tebow to admit that, yes, he?s human.? And, yes, he sometimes has bad days.? And, yes, he was frustrated last week.? And, yes, he made it known that if he?s not the starter he doesn?t want to be the gimmick, either.

Saying that would go a much longer way toward helping his ?reputation? than the clumsy manner in which he has handled the current situation.

Obesity declining in young, poorer kids: study

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The number of low-income preschoolers who qualify as obese or "extremely obese" has dropped over the last decade, new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show.

Although the decline was only "modest" and may not apply to all children, researchers said it was still encouraging.

"It's extremely important to make sure we're monitoring obesity in this low-income group," said the CDC's Heidi Blanck, who worked on the study.

Those kids are known to be at higher risk of obesity than their well-off peers, in part because access to healthy food is often limited in poorer neighborhoods.

The new results can't prove what's behind the progress, Blanck told Reuters Health - but two possible contributors are higher rates of breastfeeding and rising awareness of the importance of physical activity even for very young kids.

Blanck and her colleagues used data on routine clinic visits for about half of all U.S. kids eligible for federal nutrition programs - including 27.5 million children between age two and four.

They found 13 percent of those preschoolers were obese in 1998. That grew to just above 15 percent in 2003, but dropped slightly below 15 percent in 2010, the most recent study year included.

Similarly, the prevalence of extreme obesity increased from nearly 1.8 percent in 1998 to 2.2 percent in 2003, then dropped back to just below 2.1 percent in 2010, the research team reported Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Whether kids are obese is determined by their body mass index (BMI) - a measure of weight in relation to height - and by their age and sex.

For example, a four-year-old girl who is 40 inches tall would be obese if she was 42 pounds or heavier. A two-year-old boy who is 35 inches tall qualifies as obese at 34 pounds or above, according to the CDC's child BMI calculator. (The CDC's BMI calculator for children and teens is available here:.)

The new findings are the first national data to show obesity and extreme obesity may be declining in young children, Blanck said.

"This is very encouraging considering the recent effort made in the field including by several U.S. federal agencies to combat the childhood obesity epidemic," said Dr. Youfa Wang, head of the Johns Hopkins Global Center on Childhood Obesity in Baltimore.

Blanck said between 2003 and 2010 researchers also saw an increase in breastfeeding of low-income infants. Breastfeeding has been tied to a healthier weight in early childhood.

Additionally, states and communities have started working with child care centers to make sure kids have time to run around and that healthy foods are on the lunch menu, she added.

Parents can encourage better eating by having fruits and vegetables available at snack time and allowing their young kids to help with meal preparation, Blanck said.

Her other recommendations include making sure preschoolers get at least one hour of activity every day and keeping television sets out of the bedroom.

"The prevalence of overweight and obesity in many countries including in the U.S. is still very high," Wang, who wasn't involved in the new study, told Reuters Health in an email.

"The recent level off should not be taken as a reason to reduce the effort to fight the obesity epidemic."

Gene variants affect pain susceptibility in children

Dec. 24, 2012 ? At least two common gene variants are linked to "clinically meaningful" differences in pain scores in children after major surgery, reports a study in the January issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia, official journal of the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS).

"[O]ur study is highly suggestive of a genetic component in pain response among children," concludes the study by Dr Chantal Mamie and colleagues of Geneva University Hospitals, Geneva, Switzerland. But an accompanying editorial question the relevance of this and previous studies of pain-related genes for management of pain in individual patients.

Gene Variants Influence Pain Scores after Surgery ?

The study was designed to explore whether several "candidate" gene variants affected pain scores in a group of 168 children undergoing major surgery -- either abdominal or bone and joint operations. The children and their parents were tested for variant forms ("polymorphisms") of six different genes previously reported as having a possible impact on pain.

The genetic results were compared with the children's pain scores, as routinely monitored during the 24-hour recovery period after surgery. During that time, the children had access to patient- (or parent- or nurse-controlled) analgesia with strong opioid (morphine-related) pain relievers.

Variants of two genes were related to "clinically meaningful" increases in pain scores -- at least four "peak" scores higher than six (on a ten-point scale) during the 24 hours after surgery. After adjustment for other factors, the risk of elevated pain scores was 4.5 times higher for children with a specific variant of the gene ABCB1, which affects the transport of opioid drugs to the central nervous system.

Risk of elevated pain scores was 3.5 times higher for children with a certain variant of the gene OPRM, a key target receptor for opioid binding. The associations with ABCB1 and OPRM variants remained significant after adjustment for patterns of gene inheritance from parents. Variants of two additional genes affecting pain perception -- NTRK and COMT -- were linked to more subtle, "subclinical" effects on pain scores.

? But Have No Effect on Use of Pain Medications

Surprisingly -- even though the gene variants affected pain scores -- they were unrelated to the total dosage of opioid medications used. The dosage of patient-controlled analgesia provides an important objective measure of pain and pain control after surgery.

"The present results are plausible given the known functionality of the candidate genes, and are consistent with the findings in adults," Dr Mamie and colleagues write. Although there has been a wealth of research on the genetic basis of pain in adults, the researchers add, "This first but small cohort study provides clues to further explore the genetic foundations of pediatric pain."

In an accompanying editorial, Drs Debra Schwinn and Ruth Landau of University of Washington, Seattle, put the findings in perspective. A decade ago, researchers thought that the discovery of genes affecting pain perception and opioid responses would soon play an important role in "individualizing" pain control after surgery. Subsequent studies have shown that the situation is more complex, and that the inheritance of pain susceptibility and opioid responsiveness is "probably less straightforward and predictable than previously foreseen."

Especially with the lack of effect on pain medication dosage, Drs Schwinn and Landau suggest that the presence of gene variants (genotype) may be less important than the way those genes are expressed in the individual (phenotype). Because of the complexity of the associations, they conclude, "[T]ailoring opioid analgesia based on selective genotyping is unlikely to occur anytime soon."

Western Digital MyNet AC1300

Western Digital's MyNet AC1300 is the company's first pre-draft 802.11ac router. Western Digital?only recently got into the wireless router market with its debut router, the MyNet N900 this past summer. While the MyNet N900 is a surprisingly good first effort, the AC1300, when tested in 11ac mode, gave some of the lowest throughput we've seen among the current crop of 11ac routers; lost its Internet connection a couple times; and did not provide the QoS streaming improvements we saw with the N900. On the plus side, the AC1300 provides excellent throughput at 5GHz in 802.11n and offers the same uncomplicated setup and attractive interface of the N900. Still, on the merits of 11ac alone, there are better pre-draft 11ac routers. Western Digital's own MyNet N900 is a more impressive router in general.

Specs
The MyNet AC1300 is similar in design to the MyNet N900 except that it's smaller and has an all-black casing opposed to the black and silver housing of the N900. Another difference between the two: Western Digital surprised the consumer networking world by going off the beaten track and adding seven Gigabit LAN ports to the rear panel of the N900 instead of the standard four. The AC1300 has just the four Gigabit ports. I was a bit disappointed that Western Digital did not also offer the extra three LAN ports that made their first router stand out from the pack.

On the front of the router are fours LEDs representing power, wireless status, WAN, and USB device connectivity. A WPS button for connecting clients at a touch is also on the front. WPS works very well with Western Digital's router as I found when connecting the AC1300 to its companion MyNet Wi-Fi bridge.

The rear of the device has four Gigabit LAN ports, WAN port, two USB ports, a reset button, and a power button.

The AC1300 is a dual-band router supporting up to 450 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 1300Mbps on 5GHz.

Setup
Western Digital has one of the easiest router setups on the market, rivaled by the setup process of Cisco Linksys' Smart Wi-Fi routers. While the router ships with a setup and resource CD, a hard copy guide is included in the packaging. The guide details through illustrations how to set the router up in five steps.

The first couple of steps show how to plug in the power adapter and connect cables. As soon as the router is powered on, two default SSIDs are already created for connecting clients. Once I connected a Windows client to the 2.4GHz WLAN, I received a message in Windows, "Do you want to set up your network? This is a new router that has not been set up. Click OK to start set up."

After I clicked "OK," I was prompted to enter the router's eight-digit PIN. This PIN is printed on a sticker affixed to the underside of the router. A wizard then walked me through giving my wireless network a name and setting up security.
This completes the router's initial set up; from there, you can access the router's interface for further configuration.

Features and Settings
The AC1300's interface is the same My Dashboard interface that I liked in the MyNet N900. As in the N900, the AC1300's web-based GUI displays a nice round-up of initial "to-do" tasks via a notification message drop down list in the home screen. The notifications provide a good reminder for customers to perform important specific configurations such as changing the router's default admin password.

The home page dashboard provides an overview of the AC1300's settings such as SSIDs, Internet connection status, number of devices connected, and more general information about the router and network.

Through the dashboard, you can also see any USB devices connected and if parental controls are enabled. There's an advanced settings tab which will allow configuration of more granular features including WAN, IPv6, and Dynamic DNS settings.

The features have not changed since the launch of the N900. You can read that review for a more in-depth overview of specific features such as parental controls. As with the N900, there aren't a lot of advanced capabilities to make this a router a choice for many small businesses. There's no VPN server and IPv6 support is light. However, there are robust settings for home networks. For instance, you can create up to 32 firewall rules, enable MAC filtering, and Application Level Gateway (ALG) which allows traffic such as PPTP, IPSec, and SIP for VoIP to pass through the network.

You have some very light NAS capabilities through the software. I was pleased to see when I added a flash drive, the AC1300's interface picked right up on the drive's make, model, and capacity.

Multimedia
Western Digital's big push behind its MyNet line of router is that they are optimized for multimedia.? FasTrack QoS is Western Digital's proprietary Quality-of-Service feature that's baked-into the AC1300 (and the N900, as well).

For streaming Internet content to a home network, the speed of streaming largely depends on how fast your Internet connection is. Yet, with the FasTrack QoS enabed on the N900 router, time to buffer and play a movie from Netflix decreased about ten seconds. I did not see the same results with the AC1300. I did see slightly better streaming on the internal network with FasTrack enabled on the AC1300, decreasing the time to buffer and stream a movie from one client machine to another about 3 seconds.
In fairness, other router manufacturers also offer some sort of multimedia streaming enhancement. I tested Netgear's solution on its R6300 router and time to stream and buffer a Netflix movie was reduced about six seconds. For streaming within the network from device-to-device, the R6300's QoS shaved also about three minutes off time to buffer. With Belkin's AC 1200 DB Wi-Fi Dual-Band AC+ Gigabit Router, that buffering time was shaved about a second and-a-half.

So I don't see huge difference with streaming with proprietary QoS technology enabled or disabled among different routers. However, QoS is more helpful when streaming within a network between devices, and is also dependent on capabilities of a client's wireless adapter. I did receive better streaming in testing with Western Digital's N900 than with the AC1300, using the same file and equipment, which is a bit puzzling.

Further Issues
I have to note a couple of times during a course of two-day testing; two clients I had connected to the AC1300 lost Internet connectivity. When I went into the router's interface, I saw a notification message stating that Internet was not set up. I quick on and off of the router resolved the issue (and reconnected the clients) but the software seems a bit buggy. I also noticed at times, some slow responsiveness switching through differed settings pages within the interface.

Performance
With an 11ac router, the main criterion in gauging performance is throughput at the 802.11ac mode. Of course, with the exception of D-Link's Wireless AC1200 Dual Band USB Adapter (DWA-182) , there are no compatible 11ac wireless adapters for clients on the market.

Instead, I tested 11ac throughput using Western Digital's 11ac MyNet Wi-Fi Bridge, Intel's 3x3 6300 AGN wireless adapter, and D-Link's DWA-182 USB adapter.
Unfortunately, as compared with other pre-draft 11ac routers, the AC1300 gave some of the lowest throughput in 11ac mode. At 15 feet, its wireless throughput averaged 75 Mbps. This is quite below other 11ac routers such as the Asus RT-AC66U, which averaged 129 Mbps at the same distance; Cisco Linksys' Smart Wi-Fi Router AC 1750HD Video Pro EA6500 ?which tested at 133 Mbps; and Buffalo's?AirStation AC1300/N900 Gigabit Dual-Band Wireless router which managed 187 Mbps at the same distance.?

In 802.11n mode at the 5GHz band, the AC1300 fared better. It cranked out speed only second to the Cisco Linksys EA6500. At the 2.4 GHz band, in Mixed mode, the AC1300 did not again, perform as well as the Asus or Buffalo router. Western Digital's device also had worse range, decreasing 30 percent in throughput testing from 5 feet and then from 30 feet away from the router.
While performance in 5 GHz 802.11n mode was excellent; overall, the AC1300's throughput and range was underwhelming.? Below are charts comparing it to other pre-draft 11ac routers:

Second Router Not as Impressive as Debut
The AC1300 is the second router I've tested from Western Digital and, frankly, it's not as impressive as Western Digital's debut MyNet N900. The performance at 11ac mode, even using Western Digital's 11ac bridge was below that of several competing 11ac router. The range drop at 2.4 GHz mode is also troubling. While the same good interface from the N900 is carried over into the AC1300, it's unfortunate that Western Digital did not retain the seven LAN ports. Finally, I saw no improvement with multimedia streaming.

The AC1300 is a 3.5 out of 5 star earner for consumer routers; the current Editors' Choice being the Cisco Linksys EA6500 has better throughput, just as easy a setup and better range in 2.4 GHz Mixed mode?a common mode most home users are likely to use.

First groups get invitations to inaugural parade

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Spouses of those serving in the armed forces, military and civilian colleges, gay musicians, service dogs trainers and a drill team from President Barack Obama?s hometown are among the diverse groups that were invited Tuesday to participate in next month?s inaugural parade down Pennsylvania Avenue.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee has started sending out invitations to groups nationwide to march behind Obama from his swearing in at the Capitol to the White House on Jan. 21.

The first wave selected includes the marching band from Miami University of Ohio, the alma matter of GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan where first lady Michelle Obama spoke during the final weekend of the campaign. Also selected was the Virginia Military Institute, a traditional performer in inaugural parades.

Others include Military Spouses of Michigan, the Lesbian and Gay Band Association of St. Louis, Chicago?s South Shore Drill Team and marching bands from Little Rock Central High School and Washington?s Ballou Senior High School.

?The talented groups chosen to participate in the inaugural parade reflect the spirit, values, and diversity of our great nation,? Obama said in a statement.

The application process was run by the military, beginning in October before the election and continuing through the end of last month. The Joint Task Force ? National Capital Region is charged with supporting inaugural ceremonies and reviewed about 3,000 online applications to make sure they met minimum requirements before presenting about 300 applicants to the Presidential Inaugural Committee for final selection.

The process included members of military bands reviewing video and audio files of performances to judge the skill of marching bands, musical acts and drill teams. Other applicants included floats, silent marching groups, dancers and other performers.

?As you can imagine, everybody wants to participate,? Maj. Gen. Michael Linnington told reporters at a briefing Wednesday.

More than 20 groups were invited Tuesday, with the committee still reviewing applications and planning to continue to invite others on a rolling basis to represent all 50 states.

Among those chosen in the first wave was Canine Companions for Independence, a Virginia-based nonprofit that provides free assistance dogs to people with disabilities. ?We couldn?t be more excited,? said Susan Lee Vick, the group?s national director of development. She said their marching team may include puppies in training and graduate teams of veterans and their animals, because supporting wounded warriors is a major focus. ?We feel that marching in the parade gives us a chance to really express our commitment and that value.?

Committee officials say they don?t have a specific target size for the parade, but about 130 groups with close to 15,000 participants were selected in 2009. This time organizers say the parade is expected to be smaller, keeping with plans to downsize the overall size of the event from his historic first inauguration, when a record 1.8 million people packed the National Mall.

Inaugural parades are a time-honored tradition following the president?s swearing in, beginning with the local militias that accompanied George Washington from his Virginia home to New York, where his inauguration was held in 1789. Thomas Jefferson charted the modern day route in 1805 when he rode a horse to the White House after being sworn in for his second term, followed by a spontaneous procession of local workers and a Marine Band. President Dwight Eisenhower had the longest parade in 1953, lasting about five hours, compared with about two hours for more recent events. President Jimmy Carter walked along Pennsylvania Avenue during his parade, which has since become traditional practice for the presidents as they begin their new terms.

The parade shuts down one of Washington?s main thoroughfares, and involves the temporary removal of all street lights along the Pennsylvania Ave. route.

Costs of the parade are covered by the Presidential Inaugural Committee?s fundraising. Participants must pay their own travel costs to attend, but the committee said it is trying to help them find affordable accommodations at a time when many Washington hotels are booked or charge inflated rates.

Obama begins his second term at noon on Sunday, Jan. 20, and is planning a private swearing in at the White House with limited press coverage. His public inauguration will be on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Monday, Jan. 21, since the ceremony is not traditionally held on Sundays.

Obama is kicking off the inaugural weekend by asking Americans to participate in a National Day of Service on Saturday, Jan. 19. He plans to end the festivities with a special prayer service at the Washington National Cathedral on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

?The beginning of President Obama?s second term will be marked by the acknowledgement and celebration of the role of people of faith in American life,? Presidential Inaugural Committee spokeswoman Addie Whisenant said in a statement Tuesday announcing the prayer service. ?President Obama?s own faith has played an integral role in his life, his commitment to service and his presidency, and this important tradition will celebrate the values and diversity that make us strong.?

The Presidential Inaugural Committee has yet to announce details of some other inaugural events, including the number of official balls the president plans to attend. Organizers have said there will be fewer parties than the 10 Obama had four years ago and that they will all be held at the Washington Convention Center.
