This winter, for the very first time, my lips have been very dry and chapped. I thought that I had developed a sensitivity or allergy to the long wear lipstick?I?ve?worn every day for the past few years. I stopped wearing it for several days and the condition?didn?t?change at all, so I ruled out my favorite red lipstick as a culprit. I still have no idea what caused this sudden dryness, but I have figured out a way to treat and (hopefully) stop the chronic dryness.
When your lips feel dry, the first instinct is usually to lick them. This is the beginning of a vicious cycle. The saliva provides instant moisture, but it?doesn?t?last long: The enzymes in our saliva cause further dryness, making you want to lick your lips again.
Petroleum jelly and waxy lip treatments don?t work for me. They did provide immediate soothing, but once they wore off, my lips were once again painfully dry and chapped. I wanted to find a solution that would actually make my lips soft and healthy again, not just provide instant relief.
One evening, after cleansing my face, I noticed that there was a visible layer of dead skin on my lips. For whatever reason, my lips had stopped shedding dead skin cells on their own, so they needed a little help from me.
- I use a damp terry cloth washcloth to gently remove the skin and my lips looked better immediately. I then apply some Sunshine Squalane Lip Serum. This is a pretty important step because unlike the skin on the rest of the body, there are no oil producing glands in the lips. Squalane is identical to the oil that our glands produce naturally.
- In the evenings, I apply a light coating of Silk Sheets Whipped Shea Butter, which is a combination of shea butter and shea nut oil. In the daytime, I just use Sunshine Squalane Serum under lip gloss or lipstick.
If you?re really fond of ?chap stick? type lip balms, you could use it instead of shea butter. However, lip balm alone will only provide temporary relief from dryness. The Squalane provides real moisture and lubrication for the lips and will get rid of chronic dryness over time.
I did this regimen for 5 days/evenings and my lips were back to normal. I must admit, after things were back to normal, I did get lazy and just stopped exfoliating. Sure enough my lips were once again dry and chapped. I decided to just add daily exfoliation plus serum to my daily skin care regimen to make sure my lips stay soft, healthy and kissable !
